Wednesday March 31, 2010

The painting in the kitchen is done and all of the new trim is up and painted also. I have been finishing the closet in the second bedroom also which is the one that the large cabinet put in the kitchen backs into. In the closet I have put down a hardwood floor to match the rest of the room and have fixed all the drywall. We are getting ready to hang all the new cabinets soon.

Tuesday March 16, 2010

The drywall is all done and the kitchen has been primed in the last week. The ceiling paint is done and now we are trying to figure out what color to paint the walls. I think we have it narrowed down to a few choices at this point but a new sample always seems to pop up. Hopefully we can paint this coming week and begin to install the new cabinets.

Wednesday March 3, 2010

We had a small cabinet that was inset into the wall that provided some sort of pantry for the kitchen. One of the main goals of this project is to provide more storage in the kitchen, therefore the old one is going and a new one is being put in its place. This is the beginning of replacing the cabinets in the kitchen. This also allows for the closet in the second bedroom to be completed now. With this finished I can finish mudding and kitchen and move onto paining it really soon.

We had a vote, and the arch lost.

I have been mudding the lower portion of the new ceiling and where it meets up with the existing walls. I put a new door in that will close off the laundry room, it is not that great to look at when you walk in the door. With all the new angles we have created in the kitchen we are not sure if the arch in between the kitchen and rest of the house works any more so I have drawn out what it would look like without the arch for now and we will decide soon if it stays or not.

With the old ceiling removed now I had to finish the dryawall in the kitchen and laundry room where I was not able to get to before. You can see it in the pictures, it is the area not painted white. I decided to shorten the wall between the laundry room and kitchen by 8" also. It dows not show in any pictures but there is no ceiling above the laundry room, the only divider is the wall in between.

The new ceiling is primed and it is time to take the old ceiling down. There is a plastic vapor barrier that was in between the old drywall and the ceiling joists. We tried to roll this as we took it down to collect all the dust and debris in it but were only slightly successful. It is hard not to make a mess when you take down a ceiling. I made sure all the walls lined up like I hoped and everything looks great. With no other work needed above, it was time to take down the ceiling joist and see what I did.

I have been working on the mudding and it is almost done. I need to prime the ceiling and as soon as that is done the ceiling can be taken down. I am excited to take it down as I have no idea what this whole project is going to look like all together.

I have cut the slot in the kitchen ceiling which is allowing me to bring full sheets of drywall up above. The drywall is almost done being put up and it is much warmer in this area of the attic now. The drywall holds the heat much better than when there is just insulation and the hole I cut helped also. The framing you can see in the second to last picture is going to be the top of the closet for the utility room. I think all of my measurements are on and the walls will all line up but really will not know if everything is perfect until I take the ceiling down.

Insulation is done now and it is a bit warmer in the attic. I think if I cut a hole into the kitchen it would allow heat to come up and give me a way to bring the drywall up. As you can see the skylights are covered in snow which is fine, keeps the neighbors from wondering what I am up to. I have framed out the wall that will close this new area off from the rest of the attic and at this point all of the electrical is pretty much done.
